United News   The "Nick Cooper" North Devon Branch Player of the Season Award
Branch News
Membership Info

Throughout the course of the Domestic and European Campaign, North Devon United supporters go up to Old Trafford to watch Manchester United play as many home games as possible. At these games, any person that travelled with the Branch is asked to choose who they thought was the most outstanding player for the particular game. The votes are made at the end of the game on the coach journey back  to Devon, counted, and the result for that match is then announced.

At the end of the season, all of the votes are tallied up, and the result is finalised. During the AGM meeting held before the start of the next campaign, the Player of the Season (as voted for by the North Devon supporters) is announced and that player is then given an award by the Supporters Club during the following season. It is possible, but not certain, that members of the Branch will be given the chance to meet their Player of the Season when the award is presented to him.

The 2007/2008 season votes were as follows: in third place with 129 votes and 5 Man of Match awards was…Owen Hargreaves. In second place with 153 votes, and he was voted overall Man of Match on 6 occasions was…Cristiano Ronaldo. So this season’s winner with a total 153 votes and 7 Man of the Match awards (yes it really was that tight!) was…Carlos Tevez.

Well done Carlos, for being voted the "Nick Cooper" North Devon Branch - Player of The Season. 2007/2008.

After spells in South America with Boca Juniors and Corinthians, Carlos Tevez, along with fellow Argentina star Javier Mascherano, joined West Ham in 2006. The players were reportedly owned by a ‘third party’, Media Sports Investments, and the Hammers were later fined a record £5.5m for breaching Premier League rules over the signings. He was linked with several clubs before joining United for £20m last summer and scored 19 goals in his first season for the European Champions.

It is perhaps not surprising that, despite initially being dismissed by some as being too similar to Rooney, Tevez has emerged as one of the Theatre of Dreams’ lead actors. He has fought for stage space and won it, making nearly as many starts (34) as Rooney (35). In Europe he has been especially productive, with four strikes in three starts.

“Having Tevez gave us a different way of playing,” said Ferguson. “He’s so busy, and he’s scored four goals which have been among the most important of our season: against Chelsea, in the last minute against Tottenham, at Liverpool and at Lyon.

Well done again Carlos, for being voted the "Nick Cooper" North Devon Branch - Player of The Season. 2007/2008
